CHAPTER TEN

Kyle

“Are you sure you don’t want another piece of corn?” Alejandra asked as she held out a piping-hot platter of the spiced, cheesy goodness.

“I’ve eaten four already, but thank you for another lovely lunch.”

Kyle had gone to visit the women who’d taken up residence in Roman’s father’s mansion at the end of the peninsula where Kyle now lived. He tried to visit as often as he was able to check on how they all were doing after being freed from their forced servitude.

Many months ago, he’d discovered Alejandra hiding behind his father’s garage. That clandestine meeting led to uncovering a human trafficking ring, his parents’ involvement, and his subsequent injuries. But he wouldn’t change a thing about meeting her. If he hadn’t, the rest of the women taking refuge in this house would still be in danger, or dead.

The decision to become their benefactor was an easy one. He had more money than he could spend in one lifetime, and these people needed his help. He’d arranged for tutors, language coaches, and lawyers to protect their interests. With any luck, the girls would be attending online classes in the fall. However, today, he was here for an entirely different reason.

As he watched the women bustling around the large kitchen, he was certain about his proposal. The mansion always smelled as if a feast was being prepared, and he never left his visits hungry.

“How are the classes turning out?” he asked Crystal, one of the two older ladies who worked to protect the vulnerable in Seattle, from where they’d all come.

“Most of the girls are picking up English quickly, which is encouraging, and they’re settling in well.”

“Is there anything you can think of you need, or something that might help with the transition?” If she said yes, he’d try to find it.

“You’ve already done so much.”

“Not nearly as much as these women deserve.”

“I have a small list I’ve been keeping when things pop up,” she admitted before digging out the piece of folded paper from her apron pocket. “It isn’t too much.”

Kyle took the list and gave it a quick read before shoving it into his pocket. He’d make sure the items were ordered.

“How about the grocery site I signed you up for? How’s it working out?”

“Exactly as you’d had hoped. The women look through it and add what they want to the monthly order. Spices, fresh food, meats, all the necessities. They often plan meals together months in advance. It’s a luxury they’ve never known.”

Looking around at the smiling faces, laughter, and camaraderie reminded him of the team who’d saved him. Which made him wonder, what was Shaw doing right now? It’d been a week since he left, and what had been an expected quick return had been extended with no end in sight.

Kyle pulled himself out of obsessing about Shaw and Spence’s safety before his mood soured.

“I’m happy it’s working out. There’s another reason I came down to visit. I was hoping to speak to all the ladies.”

Crystal’s smile never wavered.
